To visually represent a musical canon I've used the process of a snow drop flowering and then wilting, this short animation will be repeated through the film also to show the beginning, middle and end of the narrative.

This is the stage of my film that I showed at my mid point critique, it shows the basic idea and atmosphere I want to create but doesn't particularly follow the narrative although it takes imagery from the poem. I'm happy with the progress I've made at this point but it needs more structure and it needs to correspond with the poem. One idea that came up in the critique was to somehow visually show a musical canon because the poem repeats itself in several verses so I proceeded to come up with ways of putting this into action.

This is my first hand drawn animation of a deer running, like the man walking it has the look I am after but isn't smooth enough, I am not totally happy with it.

This is a collage I created and scanned the process of, it consists of photos I took whilst in scotland of snow covered mountains and trees. I then painted over it and animated an eagle flying across the painted surface using stencils of the stages of it's flight.
I created part of the animation by scanning the process of this watercolour and pencil drawing, I've used it to link parts of film with animation. It is based on a mountain range where I was staying.

These are some photos taken in Scotland using my slr.

Deerfirst

My first attempt at a drawn animation was a man walking. I wanted to create the character who is saying farewell to the highlands, I imagined him to be an old man wearing classic clothes and hat.

My Heart's in the Highlands

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.
